Chapter3. Industrial Infrastructure and Trade Supporting the Economy
of Nagoya
- In FY 2006, Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) handled
about 11.99 million passengers, which was a 3% decrease on a year-on-year
basis. The airport also handled about 280,000 tons of cargo, a 2% increase
year-on-year. Following the opening of Centrair, Nagoya Airport serves
as Japan's first full-scale hub for small aircraft, and continues to
offer services to many passengers (including business persons). In
FY 2006, Nagoya Airport handled about 420,000 passengers (up 36% year-on-year).
- The Port of Nagoya celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007. The
port has contributed to the development of the Greater Nagoya Area's
economy as a sea gateway and a logistics center for quality manufacturing.
In 2006, the number of vessels entering the port decreased by 0.9%
year-on-year to 39,852, but the gross tonnage increased by 2.3% year-on-year
to 232.49 million tons. The total volume of cargo handled hit a record
high of 208.04 million tons, making the Port of Nagoya the first port
in Japan to handle over 200 million tons of cargo. In terms of the
volume of cargo handled, the Port of Nagoya has been ranked first in
Japan for five consecutive years.
- In 2006, the value of exports passing through Centrair recorded 1.1435
trillion yen, up 41.1% year-on-year. The value of imports passing through
Centrair also showed a significant increase of 18.4% year-on-year to
942.2 billion yen. Two years after opening, Centrair is expanding its
presence as an international logistics center of this area. Major products
exported through Centrair include semiconductors and other electronic
parts, visual systems, and electric circuits, while major products
imported include organic compounds, pharmaceuticals, and office equipment.
The major destinations for the exports include China, the US, and Malaysia,
with China and the US accounting for more than 40% of the total export
value. The major import counterparts include Taiwan, China, and the
US, with these three countries accounting for nearly 50% of the total
import value.
- In 2006, the value of exports and imports passing through the Port
of Nagoya recorded 10.2991 trillion yen (up 18.0%) and 4.5686 trillion
yen (up 26.6%), respectively, on a year-on-year basis. The value of
both exports and imports increased seven years in a row. The Port of
Nagoya thus ranked first in total exports and imports among all the
ports of the country. Major products exported through the Port of Nagoya
include automobiles, automobile parts, and motors, while major products
imported include petroleum gases, crude oil and raw oil, and nonferrous
metals. The major destinations for the exports include the US, China,
and Thailand, while the major import counterparts include China, the
US, and South Korea.
