Chapter5. Tourism
- In FY 2006, the total and actual number of tourists who visited the
city was 53.17 million and 30.74 million, respectively, representing
decreases of 5.51 million and 4.4 million, respectively, from FY 2005.
The decrease is attributed to a slump after FY 2005 when Expo 2005
Aichi, Japan and associated events were hosted. Of the actual 30.74
million tourists, 20.44 million came from outside the city (mostly
from neighboring areas). In fact, 72.5% of the tourists (including
those from within the city) came from the four prefectures in the Tokai
region.
- The total number of tourists who visited the city's 32 major tourist
spots was 21.51 million in FY 2006, a decrease of about 3.43 million
from FY 2005 when Expo 2005 Aichi, Japan was hosted. However, this
figure shows an upward trend from FY 2004. The most popular tourist
spot was Atsuta Jingu Shrine (6.24 million), followed by Higashiyama
Zoo and Botanical Gardens (2.02 million), the Port of Nagoya Public
Aquarium (1.93 million), Villaggio Italia (1.69 million), and Nagoya
Castle (1.10 million). The following spots enjoyed a significant increase
in the number of tourists on a year-on-year basis from FY 2005 to FY
2006: Nagoya City Art Museum (177.0%), Nagoya TV Tower (166.5%), Nagoya
City Science Museum (126.4%), Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens
(122.4%), and Nagoya Noh Theater (120.8%).
- The tourist expenditure per person in the city is 12,594 yen on average.
With tourists categorized into tourists from within the city, tourists
from outside the city, and day trippers/overnight trippers, figures
show that day trippers and overnight trippers from within the city
spend 8,311 yen and 20,200 yen on average, respectively, while day
trippers and overnight trippers from outside the city spend 9,737 yen
and 21,463 yen on average, respectively. With these figures and the
actual number of tourists taken into account, the total expenditure
by tourists in the city is estimated at 340.5 billion yen, accounting
for about 3% of the gross product of the city.
